Mercedes-Benz Spezial Roadster - e-Journal - E005

$ 20.00

Based on the Pocher Mercedes-Benz rumble-seat roadster kit (K-82, -85, -90, and -94), the Detailed Model Cars Spezial Roadster is an attempt to more accurately capture the distinctive profile of the famous second series Mercedes-Benz 500K Spezial Roadster. Mercedes-Benz produced 25 of the second series spezial roadsters and each was based on the long wheelbase 500/540K chassis, and each was essentially a coach-built custom. They began with the long chassis used under the cabriolets, and by moving the engine and firewall reward so that the front of the radiator was behind the centerline of the front wheels, the Sindelfingen artisans were able to create one of the most iconic profiles in the history of the automobile.

On the standard chassis, the front of the radiator is several inches in front of the centerline of the wheels, which allows room for rear seat passengers. On the short-chassis roadsters, the radiator is in this forward position, which explains why the short-chassis roadsters look a bit stubby in comparison to the dramatic profile of the long- wheelbase cars. (Unfortunately, the Pocher people did not move the engine rearward when they introduced their Rumble Seat Roadster which was based on the long-wheelbase chassis of their cabriolet (K-79). This resulted in the proportions of the model mimicking the stubby proportions of the short-wheelbase prototypes.)

The prototype for this model is the 540K Spezial Roadster located at the Blackhawk Museum and once the property of Briggs Cunningham. The car has several distinctive features, most of which are a result of the comprehensive restoration of the car that was done several years ago.
